Lost Nation is a drama set in New England during the American Revolution. It is the story of Vermont founding father Ethan Allen and his fight for the state of Vermont, and African-born Lucy Prince, who was enslaved until 1756 and who settled in Vermont as a free woman in 1760. Lucy lived in Sunderland from 1794 until her death in 1821, and her children lived there until the mid-1800s. Her poem, “Bars Fight,” about the 1746 Deerfield Massacre, is the first known work of African American literature.
